Decorating My Clarinet for Christmas Parade
Author: tatitheartist

I'm marching in a Christmas parade and I was wondering if anyone had some ideas as to how I could temporarily decorate my clarinet.

I live in Florida so it's nice and warm still only about 60 degrees

how about a battery operated led light chain loosely strung around the instrument and taped into place?

Wrap around a couple of glow-necklaces, such as those from http://coolglow.com/Glow-Necklaces/.

Turn your ligature with the screws up and attach a big red clown nose to it.

Tie tinsel around the end of the bell.

Seasonal hair scrunchies around the barrel and the top of the bell.

If you are looking for subtle, I once did a double green and red blattschnur out of the standard acrylic cording available at your local fabric store. Of course to maintain the vividness I did NOT run it through beeswax, so the whole thing was not too secure (would not survive taking the mouthpiece off and putting back on more than just a few very careful times).

Marching, in winter -- you're made of sterner stuff than I am.

If this is something you plan to do regularly, invest in a red or green plastic clarinet? For that matter, inquire whether you can get a barrel and lower section in one color, and an upper section and bell in the other?

When I was in the West Point Band, we did many outdoor Honor Guards (greeting a visiting general or dignitary). We wore white kid gloves with the fingertips cut off, but when the temperature got low, your fingers got too numb to feel the keys.

They issued cotton gloves with plastic on the fingertips, which made it possible to play, but didn't keep your hands warm. I got heavy knitted wool gloves and put them on with the plastic gloves over them. It wasn't easy to move my fingers, but I got used to it, and at least I could play and, more important, keep some sensation in my fingers.

That's why I switched to saxophone for marching band in High School. It was COLD in the winter in New Jersey and they didn't have to cut the finger tips out of those white gloves!

A number of years ago (10-15) doing a community band concert, I had a reindeer scrunchie that went around the top part of the bell of my clarinet, I still have the video of that concert that I did that, but the entire band was encouraged to dress up their instruments.

I think they make thick bright red/green velvet-ish ribbon, don't they? You could tie lots of bows around the barrel and bell and (if you're brave) hang some mistletoe from the ligature screws? I like the idea of twinkling lights and glow-bands, too. I'm trying to figure out how to have a Santa face on one side of your lyre/music holder and your music on the other, but I'm kind of stumped on exactly how to execute it.

Good luck, have fun!
