 Old Clarinets

Can anyone tell me about a "Ledoux" "National" Wooden B flat Clarinet?

Also what about a "Paris" "G.M. Bundy" That is surcharged "Sponsored by Selmer" on the bell.

I'm Interested in whether they are rather fine instruments or Juncque.

Thanks, Ken

Yes, I REALLY AM Kenny G----->but not the one of which you are thinking! I even play (a little)
Soprano Sax(not well)-along with alto, C-melody, and Tenor. But my main instrument is clarinet. And BTW, I don't think that my autograph would be good for anything--probably not even at my bank!

IMHO, they are neither trash nor treasure. If not in too bad a shape, they are probably worth putting into playing condition. Of course Selmer is one of the four major makers. Bundy was their student line. Old Bundys were wooden but for the most part these were made from plastic. I've seen Ledoux on the auction sites but never having seen one "up close and personal," I don't know what quality they were.

I believe that the wooden Bundy clarinets made in Paris were intermediate grade instruments. They were not the same as the wooden Bundy student models made in the US and marketed by Selmer. I own one of each. As I understand it the Bundy imprint was not always strictly a student line. The Paris Bundy I have has silver plated keywork and a much better and higher quality key design then the American wooden Bundy that I have. The wood is also much better quality on the Paris model and, as old as it is (and I am estimating sometime from the 30s or the 50s) it still has the original leather pads (as well as the original case and mouthpiece). I may be talking through my hat, but I would be surprised to find leather pads on a student model horn from any manufacturer, so don't be so sure it's a student grade horn, just because it has a Bundy imprint.

I've overhauled a few of the Bundy Paris clarinets of the 30's vintage. I can't tell any difference in the key work on them and the Selmer Paris models of the same vintage. Also, I think that they play the same. IMHO I think it was a very good instrument.

I recently purchaced a Jeffery wooden clarinet in perfect condition.. Made in France bearing the serial number 3941. I cannot find any information on this instrument other than the manufacturing of clarinets was a 'cottage' industry in France before World War 2 and this is probably one of those. The wood is dark red and all parts are matched grain with the bell somewhat figured. The finish and overall workmanship is excellent and it plays beautifully. The outside diameter is noticeably smaller in diameter than any I have compared it with and the only fault visable is a rather grainey look in parts of the bore which does not seem to effect the tone in the least. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jerry Carroll of Sacramento, California Jazz capitol of the state.

My Ledoux National clarinet had a hairline crack in the barrel when I purchased it at the antique store. Now that I have had the horn re padded, and have begun to play it, the crack has opened up and does influence the playing....particularly with a poor tone and tendency to "speak" poorly and to squeek in the range from open G down to C. What options do I have..I am reluctant to junk it because of the investment that I already have, and the tone of the instrument as a whole is pretty decent.

Thanks, KennyG

The G.M. Bundy clarinet may be an Alexandre stencil. Alexandre Selmer was Henri Selmer's brother.

@silversorcerer

I have a wooden Penzel-Mueller "new Artist" which has been labeled as "Bundy", then had the labels thoroughly sanded down and delivered under contract to USMC. You can still find the erased "{BUNDY}" logo on top/lower joints, and PM's vertical serial numbers (MxxxxxB) in under key work. 4-post throat keys is unlike other early wooden Bundies and keywork interchangeable with other PM clarinets in my possession.

Have also a couple American New-York-made horns (Barklee Artiste made by Woodwind and PM eefer) which seems to have been fitted with Selmer key work.

IMHO there had been much more cooperation/integration btw manufacturers then it is realized. Many small independent producers were buying keyset from the same source, and 50-100 years later they being labeled as stencils. But then again there were others who were buying the assembled horns or kits (drilled bodies and key sets), so where to draw the line?

Even now outsourcing is still a norm. You could buy a 100$ hard rubber Chinese made horn on e-bay, ream upper joint/barrel, adjust pads, undercut toneholes, perhaps replace speaker tube, tune it to pro-level and slap your label on.. would it be the same horn?
