My 7 year old R-13 has been about 20 to 30 cents sharp with both my 5RV Lyre and M30 VanDoren mouthpieces and the stock 66mm barrel. I need to pull out the barrel about 1/4" and the center and bell a few mm each to get close to A440.
I found I needed to get a 68mm barrel to get within a few cents above A440 without the need to pull the barrel out a bunch.
Someone told me that the above mouthpieces I got come in longer lengths than the ones I purchased. I did not know that at the time. No music store told me that.
Am I being blown smoke or did I really buy mouthpieces that were too short for my R13? What is the mouthpiece designation that indicates a mouthpiece is longer?

There are no length choices with mouthpieces. For any given manufacturer they are all the same.
However the Vandoren "13" series have larger chambers and tend to play a little flatter than the standard series so could help you here.
Are you really pulling 1/4" that's over 6mm and would take your 66mm barrel to 72mm !!!

There are A=440 and A=442 Vandoren mouthpieces, maybe you have the latter? I think sometimes this is achieved through making them about 2mm shorter for some mouthpiece types-not sure about how Vandoren achieves this. Anyway, that sounds about right if you need a barrel about 2mm longer.

Yes, Modernicus, what you said matches what I heard from others. They told me the "longer" mouthpieces have a special mark on them to indicated the longer length. Mine don't have "the mark."
But, all in all, I'm happy with the 68mm Fobes barrel I got to resolve the excessive pulling out I had to do. The intonation is very good as well.

I can't speak to the lengths of MPs, I really don't know, but I do know that some play sharper than others. I believe it has to do with the bore size. It's not uncommon for some players, me included on my Bb and A buffets, to have to use a long barrel, I use a 67 on both and pull out the middle joint because my mouthpiece plays a bit sharp. I actually had my tech put in a permanent ring about a 32nd of an inch thick in the bottom of my top joint so I don't have to actually pull the top joint out and have if wiggle. If you still have a problem you should at least try some other brand MPs to see if that will make a difference for you or not.

I wonder if the issue might be reeds? Sometimes too weak of a reed may cause biting for control. Try some firmer reeds and give yourself time to adjust to them. I bet the intonation will be lower.
