 Pruefer Clarinet

Hello All!

My sister-in-law just gave us a Pruefer clarinet that belonged to her father and I would love some information about it.

The serial number doesn't seem to match anything I've found on line. Can anyone point me in the right direction for more information? The serial number is 25398. It is stamped with the Pruefer logo. Many thanks!

Marge

Click on "Search" near top of page, type in Pruefer, lots of old posts with info will appear!

It's wood. I looked through the attached site, but like the other site I found, the serial number I have does not seem to be in any of those lists. It begins with 25...

From the serial number chart above, I'd suggest that your instrument dates from 1946 or thereabouts.

Pruefer
1934 - 1938 6851
1939 - 1941 13152
1942 - 1948 19699
1949 - 1950 27106

By 25... do you mean 25xx or 25xxx? is there maybe a digit missing at the beginning or end? Pruefer had stamped # on both joints, perhaps it would be easier to compare both.

Does it say model (something like Artist, Super Artist, Professional?). If it is from 1948-1950 era, these are the wooden models they made. If number is 25xx it would have been made prior to 1934. If number is (7)25xx it is made somewhere in 1960-1965.

The serial number is 25398, and it is stamped on both the upper and lower joint. The logo - an oval with Pruefer, Prov. RI is stamped on all the parts. There is nothing else to indicate what model stamped anywhere that I can find.

Perhaps I'm not reading the charts correctly - does it indicate that starting in 1942, the sn 19699 was made, and any sn higher than that but lower than the next number - 27106 in 1949 - was made in that 4 year time span? Then yes, it would probably have been made in 1946 or '47.

Cool!

What value, if any, would it have? I've read through much of the archived posting regarding Pruefers, and it doesn't seem as if they are all that valuable, although some seem to like them quite well. A search on eBay shows a wide range in pricing - anything from $69 up to $400.

I don't pretend to be able to play at all, but I stuck a mouthpiece on it, and despite its age, it sounded pretty good, was nicely responsive, and didn't seem to have any leaks, etc. The pads looked like they were in good shape - hard to believe!

Thanks again for your replies.

The ones which have more value are the one which had been made for Carl Fisher (wood Artist model). One piece HR Festival b/c of better intonation.

Also Silver Throat are popular for jazz. Other then that not much value

here some reviews on Pruefers: http://www.clarinetpages.net/vintage-odd-brands/prue
