While I may be missing an obvious solution.....I'm wondering what any of you Bb Contra players use for reed case/storage. Bari Sax Rico Reedguard isn't wide enough...and a Muncy Winds Bass Clarinet leather reed case isn't big enough for the Bb Contra reeds. Has anyone tried the Roger Garrett Contra Alto reed case?? Currently using Rico Contrabass Reeds or a Legere Contrabass reed...but really surprisingly impressed with the Legere on my Contrabass...did NOT like it on Bass Clarinet or Contra Alto at all.
Thanks for any suggestions on reed storage.

I rub the top and bottom of the reed between my thumb and forefinger, going from the top of the vamp off the end of the tip, until it's thoroughly dry and then put it back in the [Vandoren] box. It's useful to buy a whole box of reeds and prepare them all. They're expensive but they last forever.
Or you might try a Legere. Keep it in the holder it came in, or in one of the standard paper-stapled-over-cardboard holders if it will fit. Or you could drop it in a small envelope.

When I couldn't find a reed case for my EEb contra-alto, I went the unnecessarily elaborate route. I cut a piece of glass to a size that will hold four reeds (two on each side), ground the edges of the glass smooth, and sewed together the ends of a couple of strips of 1'4" flat elastic to make a pair of glorified rubber bands to hold the reeds onto the glass. A stiff piece of plastic would have been a better choice, less likely to break -- cut from the bottom of a frozen food microwave container, maybe. But I had loads of glass lying around from my old stained glass business and, eh, the glass looks nice. To protect the glass, I sewed a case-cover of lightweight, washable upholstery fabric (left over from a sewing project), lined with shirt-weight fabric, with stiff cardboard inserted in the sides between the lining and the outer fabric. The case-cover closes with a zipper, just in case I ever take the contra out in public and have to change reeds during a concert, because a plastic zipper is almost silent while opening a Velcro closure makes noise -- although if I did start taking the contra out of my attic practice space, I'd go ahead and replace that vulnerable glass with plastic.

I ordered one from Roger Garrett. he make nice custom reed cases at very resaonable rate. I have ended up with 4 of his cases now.

. . . did not like Leger reed on contra alto. I'm using Legere bari sax reed on Fobes mouthpiece. Works better on my contra alto than any cane reed I've tried. But yeah, no place to put the thing. I just dry it off and stick it in the screw-together cylinder than the mouthpiece came in. WARNING: do not screw one of these together with a reed but no mouthpiece in it.

I was hoping you'd "chime in" Bobby since I know you're a Contra player (from reading posts on here). I DID order the Garrett Contra Alto reed case. Mr Garrett replied to my email inquiry......and said that while he knows some people have used his Contra Alto/Bari Sax reed case for Bb Contra's....it doesn't fit all reeds. I decided to go on an get the Contra case and if it doesn't work for my Contra Bass....I can use it for my Contra Alto or Bari Sax reeds. I'm also getting his MO Bass Clarinet mouthpiece. I'm currently using those Rico Reedguards for most of my storage needs...but will probably order some more, like you did, Bobby.
Lelia, not inclined to sew a thing here...so making my own case cover wasn't in the cards.
alto gether...I didn't like the Legere Eb Contra reeds either.....but the Bb Contra reeds are working fine.... I'm currently using a Fibracell Premier Bari Sax #3 reed on Contra Alto and it works great for me. I prefer synthetics on the Contra's because I'm doubling...switching from Bass Clarinet to Contra Alto to Contra Bass....all in one concert.
We just performed John Mackey's "Sasparilla" and I had the pleasure of playing the Contrabassoon solo on my Contrabass. Loved starting a solo on the written Low Db......at double forte!!!!! Christmas Concert coming up and I'll be playing the Contra Bass for Russian Christmas Music and playing it in a sextet of a Christmas Carol arrangement.
Thanks for the input....will update this after the reed case and mouthpiece arrive.
