should I apply to another music school?
Author: Lanie

I play the clarinet and I'm a senior in high school. Ever since I was little it was understood in my family that I was going to Sam Houston State University. I have already been accepted to the university itself. Now I just have to wait to audition in February. I am worried I wont be accepted int their music school. Not because I'm not good enough. But because they might find someone better. I am an exceptional player. Not the best but I work really really hard. Harder than most. I was first in out region and 7th in the area last year. Anyways, my parents don't want me to apply to another school but I'm worried if I dont get accepted into Sam's music shool and I dont apply I will regret it for the rest of my life. if that were to happen I know I'd regret it. I have automatic admission into the other school I'm thinking of applying to, which is UT Arlington. Should I apply or no?

Lanie -

You absolutely should apply to both schools. There's nothing wrong and everything right about doing this, and neither school will hold it against you.

Equally important, you're your own person. You may even like Arlington better than Sam Houston, and if you do, you're under no obligation to fall in line with an "understanding" that you had no part in forming.

You make this important decision for yourself. Believe me, if you pick between two Texas schools, you may get a few tears from your family, but that will pass quickly.

Right now, you're a big frog in a small pond. So was I. When you jump into the ocean, you may find, as I certainly did, that there are people who play rings around you. In fact, you should expect that. By the time you're a senior at Sam Houston or Arlington, you'll be playing a lot better than you do now.

And by the way, state universities always accept high school big frogs from their states. At the audition, take a moderate, slow breath, count like crazy and play a little slower than your best speed. Slow and accurate is much better than fast and sloppy.

Everybody goes through what you're going through, and nobody dies. You'll be fine.

I agree with Ken that it's a good idea to apply to a second school. In fact, I think it's a good idea to have a Plan B about life in general. Stuff happens.

When I entered college in 1966, I only wanted to go to one school: the University of California at Berkeley. I also applied to Stanford, but that wasn't honest bet-hedging, because I knew that as a middle-class person with no family ties to Stanford, I wouldn't get in, even though technically I had the academic qualifications. Thus I turned waiting for the letters into an unnecessary nail-biter. Yeah, I got into Berserkley, but I knew I should have applied elsewhere as well and I've tried not to make that kind of mistake ever since.

It never hurts to have a back-up school. But here are some numbers to consider. At Sam Houston State, there are two clarinet faculty with 34 students in the studio (program). Of these 34, two are performance majors and 13 are seniors.

What kind of music career are you planning to pursue?

Best regards,
jnk

If you did not get in to the music school, you might consider going to the university and taking the general (non music major) classes you will need. Take lessons on the side and re audition the following year for entrance to the music program.

Can you share the reasons why your parents seem insistent that you apply to just the one university?

The band director at AT-Arlington is awesome ; the music program there is wonderful.

Also look at Texas A&M - Commerce. Dr. Druhan is an outstanding clarinet professor.

And you don't have to stay in your back yard either?

I am majoring in music education. I really like the professor at Sam Houston and I really want to learn from her. I'm just scared because there is always a chance that I won't be accepted. I also like the professor at Texas Tech. I don't have automatic acceptance there though. I don't want to get too far away from home. I'm 45 minutes from Sam Houston.
Thanks for your advice everyone:)

I assume they accept more than just one clarinet student but in any case, you should always apply to several schools just in case. Most students I've known apply to at least 6 music schools.

I believe that if you're interested in music ed, Sam Houston would welcome you with open arms. I'm not a fan of UTA's music department, but the University of Houston might be worth looking into.
