 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco Sonata, Op. 128
Author: Wellywood
Date:   2013-10-19 04:50

I'm playing this piece for my third year university recital, and am looking for info to put in my programme notes, however have come across little on the composer, and pretty much nothing on the piece or it's background. Does anyone know anything about it, or know any useful resources? (For someone in New Zealand)

I played this for my Masters recital at OU in 1996. I seem to recall that Castelnuovo-Tedesco was one of the numerous artists/composers etc who fled Europe before/during WW2 and settled in USA. I believe he tried to "make it" in the film scoring scene, but never managed to work on more than one or two films. Bio details like this shouldn't be hard to find/clarify, but details about the piece are a bit harder. It's seldom been recorded, though i believe Dmitri Ashkenazy recorded it for the obscure Italian label Agora... i mention this as CD program notes might be useful to you, but Agora is hard to get in NZ (if they even exist anymore?). A number of people in NZ know Dmitri of course through his visits to Ak Uni, and maybe through the NZ clarinet facebook page someone may help you contact him (Nat Harris or Rowan Meade, for example, may be in email contact).
Still, it's early days on this BB so maybe someone will post with a wealth of info.

Elsa Ludwig-Verdehr made a great recording of this some years ago. It's well worth searching for.

Why do people like it? What's not to like, especially if you are a fan of Puccini?

I love Sabine Meyer's recording, as well as Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr's. I also like the piece, which is not easy to pull off.

There exists, if I am not mistaken, a Castelnuovo-Tedesco quartet for violin, cello, clarinet and piano (the "Quatuor pour La Fin du Temps" configuaration.) Does anybody know if it is published and has anybody heard or played it? His music, though perhaps not great, is extremely pleasant and melodic and certainly worth playing. He is one of those rather obscure composers worth exploring. Another one is the sadly neglected Ernest Toch (not to be confused with Bloch), who was considerably more adventurous.

I didn't know that Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr (a great player if you ever get the chance to hear her Wellywood) and Sabine Meyer had recorded this! I'm sure they're both great recordings. I'd love to hunt down that Quartet....

Thinking back, I heard Sabine Meyer play the C-T sonata live. It was a dynamite performance.

The Quartet for the End of Time is by Messaien, not C-T.

I think he meant that it was in the style and form of Messaien. Maybe not.

The Castelnuovo-Tedesco Sonata is one of my favorite pieces ever since learning it for the ICA competition several years ago (never did perform it, though, due to other summer obligations). Not just the lightning fast last movement, but the slow sections are nice as well. It's just a fun piece to perform. Whenever that question is asked on the board I always think of this piece as a good showcase of technique, but it's REALLY awesome when the performer can nail the technique AND make it musical. How many recitals does one sit through where it's either musical OR technical rather than both?

Ken: I never implied that the "Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps" was by Castel-Nuovo Tedesco! The work is so well-known that one needn't even mention its composer.

He quite clearly states that the quartet he mentions is in the "configuration" of the quartet for end of time.... not that it IS this work
(oh, i see Rueben already replied... maybe Ken Shaw is posting late at night, tired after getting home from gigs- i know i've made a few boo-boos that way, and have often wondered if some [unnamed] contributers make their less pleasant comments after a "post-concert" glass of wine...)

Quite all right, Ken, but I still haven't found anything out about the Castelnuovo-Tedesco quartet! Did I just dream that it existed? I must have read about its existence somewhere (in manuscript form). Castel-Nuovo Tedesco was an Italian Jew, a member of a small but very tightly-knit commmunity that goes back to the Middle-Ages. Their most celebrated composer: Salomone Rossi.

Ruben -

The quartet exists in MS, but is unpublished http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2004068107.html. See Re-discovering Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Pastorale and Rondo for Clarinet, Violin, Cello and PIano op. 185 - Dr. Nicolas del Grazia, ClarinetFest® 2004, http://www.clarinet.org/clarinetFestArchives.asp.

Ken: Thank you and that's great! Now I'll try to track it down and get somebody to publish it. Maybe Rosewood would be interested.

I have the Dimitri Ashkenazy recording (Pan Classics 510 094) of this piece. The program notes contain very minimal info but here it is if it can be of use to you:

"Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968), like Nino Rota, made his name as a composer of film music (1940-50), following his emigration from Italy to the United States on account of his Jewish birth. He was never able to fulfill the high expectations he had awakened in younger years. Leaving aside extreme musical experiments, he devoted himself to a somewhat modern style. The prevailing mood of such works as the Sonata op. 128, written in 1945, is thoroughly positive, with sometimes neoclassical tendencies."

Very interesting. Hrvanbeek- is there info on the disk/cover about when that recording was made? I'd be curious to know if it's a re-issue of the Agora recording.

You can get the CD of Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, clarinet & Ralph Votapek, piano direct from Grenadilla records http://www.grenadillamusic.com/products.html. The liner notes are online at http://www.grenadillamusic.com/cd91011.pdf.

Donald,

The notes say it was recorded at All Saints' Church, Petersham, Surrey, U.K., 10/95.
