Who is the fantastic clarinetist on the Boston Pops recordings of the late 50s and the 60s? The Boston Pops is, if I am not mistaken, the Boston Symphony without its principals, so I imagine the clarinetist was the second of the Boston Symphony. I'm also very impressed by the clarinetist of the Berlin Radio Orchestra recordings of the 50s under the direction of Fricsay (spelling?); Geuser, I think his name was.Standards have gone up, but when you listen to these musicians of yesteryear, you realise that they haven't gone up that much.

I attended many Pops concerts, 1952-56.As I recall, Pasquale Cardillo was solo clarinet . His playing in the Gershwin, with Wild at the piano, is memorable.

BSO principals did not play in the Pops, so it could not have been Gino Cioffi.
Manuel Valerio, who was assistant principal from 1950-60, is probably the one you heard. See http://www.stokowski.org/Boston_Symphony_Musicians_List.htm. Sherman Friedland said he was a tiny man who played a Selmer "A" mouthpiece, which was the closest facing available. Sherman said he had a marvelous tone.
Pasquale Cardillo, who played 2nd and Eb in the BSO, is also possible.

Heinrich Geuser recorded the Mozart and Weber Quintets on LP. I agree - fantastic playing.
I seem to remember that he also recorded the Mozart Concerto, but I do not own that.

I believe that Cardillo was the player in the Pops under Fielder.
A great place to hear some of the players of the past:

it is sad to realize that there are many terrific players who have been forgotten over time. I love hearing them and understanding the lineage and development of clarinet playing over the years.
