Terrific performance from Pay, Booth and Cowley, but not so much from American Public Media radio announcer Fred Child, who introduces the pieces with the sound of a basset hound baying and later makes the strange comment, "If a goose had a slightly more beautiful singing voice, it might sound like a basset horn." Huh? My grandfather raised geese. Nothing about the voice of a basset horn has ever reminded me of them in the slightest.

I attended a fine performance of the wind soloists of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at the Library of Congress in December, 2006, but these selections aren't from that program. The announcer doesn't say when these trios were recorded there. Anyone know?

I've only just seen and then heard this 7 year old performance. (Thanks for the heads up, Dan.)

It was the concert you were at, Lelia. The Mozart K410 wasn't on the printed programme, but we felt we had to add it -- hence my announcement.

By the way, if anyone wants to listen to that Mozart -- it's the last couple of minutes of the broadcast -- it's worthwhile looking at the score while you do. To my ear it's not immediately obvious quite how miraculous it is. Go to:

...and enter K410 in the search box.

Thanks, Tony. I did have a vague memory of you announcing that you just had to add another number but I figured that was a regular feature of the performances -- addressing the audience directly makes the listeners feel included, which I think is a fine idea, especially in a small hall like the one in the Library.

The Library of Congress is closed right now for a particularly tedious repeat performance of Partial Government Shutdown Theater, btw.
