Winter case for my clarinets

Hey! Just what is a good winter case for my clarinets? I have the bam x-light double case right now. Do you guys recommend getting a thicker double case for winter or an alteri cover? What are your thoughts!

Do you mean "winter" the season of the year or "Winter" as in Jakob Winter the German case manufacturer? You might try using capitalization, it improves communications.

Anyway, I don't know about their clarinet cases but a few years ago I bought a Winter case for my low-A bari sax and was pleased with it (and it was reasonably priced).

I have a 12-year-old Winter case for my A/Bb clarinets. And speaking of winter, it's adequate for keeping the howling winds and snow and sleet out (it has a flange around the top lid, which oddly my 1960s Buffet double case did NOT). HOwever, there's a storage cubicle that runs horizontally across the front of the case, and while it's capacious, stuff tends to sneak out of it when the case is being carried. Also, without at least 1/2" of music in the top (inside) music compartment, EVERYTHING tends to sneak out of place and fly around the case (not good). Oh, and the springs on both latches broke the first month I had the case (you need two hands to open each latch now).

I'd say the Winter case would be an OK bet for winter, provided you're willing to work with it a little. I bet you could do better, though. (I added an Olathe case cover, which is MUCH better made than the case and adds to the otherwise adequate padding, waterproofing and insulation qualities of the Winter case.)

Cold will get through any insulation eventually. How long will you be outside with your case? If it's only for a few minutes, almost anything will do. If you're nervous, go to Altieri http://www.altieribags.com/.

Cavallaro covers are similar to Altieri http://coloradocase.com/search.aspx?manufacturer=2&log=false&category=4. I use one lined with synthetic fleece. It has a big pocket in the side that will hold music and a folding stand, but it's clumsy to open and close.

If you're up to something big with a handle and rollers, Pelican will make a foam-insulated Storm Case that will hold your BAM case. http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail_storm.php?Case=iM2950 You must email them for a quote, and I doubt that they'll be cheap.

Or you could wrap the case in a blanket or bubble wrap and stuff it in a big suitcase or backpack.
