Hello!
I have been bothered by tons of Spam (the x-rated version) on my hotmail account lately, and have been searching for a place to get free email with clarinet in the domain name, such as <ronica@clarinet.com> or something. I haven't had luck with this. Does anyone know of a site that has something similar? I don't want to deal with hotmail anymore-- they must have given my address out.
Thanks--
Ronica
P.S. Currently I am <clarinetpower@hotmail.com>.

Yes, they may have sold your address to a spammer. But it is more likely you went on some board, like for instance the Sneezy.org Clarinet Bulletin Boardor something like that. Then someone with a harvesting program turned it loose on that board. Then they sold your address, and everyone else on that board, to the spammer.
It happens all the time to most web discussion boards. If you don't believe how easy that is, just pick any of those pen names folks use on this board. Find one at teh top of a phorum entry which is in a different color or underlined (depending on how you have your computer set up) and right click on the name. Then click on "properties". You will see the e-mail address right there for the world to see and sell.
If you try it on your name you will get: " mailto:clarinetpower@hotmail.com?subject=Free " That means everyone knows your address is clarinetpower@hotmail.com So if you dump your isp because of the spam, you may be punishing the wrong guy. The upside is that you will loose the spam, and probably a lot of your friend's mail, for a few weeks and then it will start again.

Terry,
A quick check of my and others' postings leads me to assume that the email address is only available on the board if included with the post. The address is optional on this board, and those concerned about spam and privacy might well decide not to include it. (Note, my name here should appear in black, not blue.)
It is also interesting to look at the ISP info that appears on each post, those on college systems generally post the domain name of the school which is easily identifyable, mine gives the name of the town where the exchange I dial into to access MSN is located, this is about 5 miles from where I live. Those folks on AOL use proxies and leave little info.

I have a freeware mail reader, one of its nice features is that I don't download all the mail... I select headers I don't want and never get them on my computer. I don't delete the spam, just its header. I really enjoy thinking about all the trouble those spammers went to and I just don't even let them on my computer. Its called Phoenix mail, but I assume that other mail readers have similar capabilities. You can probably just do a web search to find a down load of it.
Of course I enjoy being rude to phone solicitors. When the pushy newspaper calls (for the emteenth time during dinner) I ask if they have a braille edition. Sometimes I just put the phone in a drawer and let them do their little speech. Sadly spam has no equivalent.
I never get spam on my business email, as I never post anywhere using it. It only goes to co-workers and clients.
