This has piqued my curiosity! I've checked all the publishers I can think of, and no one appear to have this score, not even as a rental. Maybe I missed something. When this work is programmed, where does the material come from?

Edition Peters have the parts for hire if memory serves so I assume they have the score

There have been numerous recordings of all four Spohr concertos, the most recent, I think, by Paul Meyer. Go on his site and contact his agent http://www.paulmeyer.fr/contact.html or ask on his Facebook or LinkedIn page, or through his YouTube channel.

Michael Collins also recorded #2 recently. Also Julian Bliss, Ernst Ottensamer, Karl Leister and John Denman.

I think it's the most difficult of the four concertos, mostly because of the double-speed arpeggios in the first movement. #1 is played frequently, and #3 almost as frequently (it's Stanley Drucker's favorite). #4 is more lyrical and is for Clarinet in A. #2 is by far the rarest in performance, probably because the score is hard to get, and may be in MS.

Do a "search" of the BBoard, i'm fairly sure there was another thread on this reccently, and that Peter is correct- it's at Peter's... (no time to do my own search just now)

Actually that difficulty is trivial. The difficulty lies mostly in making the passage-work sufficiently varied. And, in playing it neatly, particularly in the last movement, where the trills have to be particularly well-executed. (There's a run up to a top C; but you can take the ossia, as Leister does.)

In 1980, when David Atherton and I were trying to record all 4 concerti, it was impossible to obtain the material for #3. John Denman had it, but was rather typically unwilling to share it.

Probably that situation has changed now.

Yes, I agree:-)

I never found this to be so in practice. I played it in San Diego in the early eighties, and later in Germany; obviously the problem was the orchestral librarian's, but news of any difficulty never reached me.

>> ...and may be in MS.>>

Interesting speculation.

Ken,

I doubt that the 2nd is only in Manuscript as you have to hire it from Peters.

Back in 2009 I made enquiries about the third concerto for a conductor friend who wanted to do it together. I found that a set of parts were available for hire from Breitkopf but a more "authentic" set (which I believe Michael Collins used for his recordings) were in archives in Kassel. I contacted them, via the Swedish Chamber Orchestra who had sourced them for Michael's recordings, and yes they had them and were available. Sadly it didn't go further as my conductor friend couldn't secure the dates he wanted.

They are out there if you really look for them.

#3 is certainly available somewhere. I have a wonderful LP of it from 1951, so the score and parts were available at least that long ago. It was played by Fritz Hammerla, an otherwise unknown clarinetist, with Eugen Jochum conducting the Lintz Bruckner Orchestra. Unfortunately, it's pitched 1/2 step too high, but my variable speed turntable can bring it down to 440. If it's available nowhere else, Stanley Drucker will have or know where to get the parts, which he used to play it with various orchestras.

Michael Bryant says that the name Hammerla is almost undoubtedly a pseudonym, adopted by a top player under contract to another label. You can hear it at http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=9.80960. However, you must get a non-US identity. It may be possible to order a CD through Amazon-UK.

My fingers were never as fast as Tony's, so I mentioned my own difficulties with the rips in the first movement of #2. All the concertos have very difficult arpeggiated passages with wide skips.
