 Need parts for Contrabass Clarinet
Author: saxlite
Date:   2013-09-09 20:00

I'm repairing a LeBlanc Contrabass clarinet- got it working fine but the special screw and knob that fasten the floor peg are missing. They are larger than the standard LeBlanc Bass Clarinet parts. The usual parts distributors do not carry these- anyone have a source for these?

Thanks,

Jerry

Couldn't you fashion a new screw and wing nut from off-the-shelf parts from your local hardware shop? Find a coach bolt of the correct diameter and file a notch in it to locate where the peg goes through the fitting and tighten it with a wing nut of the same thread - that'll be much cheaper than sourcing original parts and you could always make a spare.

I have a straight Leblanc Metal EEb, I could measure the dimensions and take a pic or two if that helps.

Thanks guys- I'll fabricate the parts if I can't buy them. Getting the threaded rod and knob isn't too hard, then just have to braze a suitable cross piece onto it, and grind the notch. I'll take the easy route if I can, tho.....

The last Leblanc bass clarinet I worked on had 1/4-20 threads. They are still available. The last Contrabass clarinet I worked on sat on the floor. Is this a "paperclip" model?

Yes, it is a paperclip model. If you stand it on the floor, the mouthpiece is too low to play. You have to rest it on a box about 6"" or so high to be comfortable. Thanks for the hardware suggestions- that looks like where we are headed. McMaster-Carr has a very complete array of nuts and bolts and knobs!

Leblanc's original round knob was badly designed, too small to let you turn it tight enough. I wrapped a couple of big rubber bands around mine to get enough leverage.

If you're making one from scratch, use a BIG wing nut or a disk maybe 4" in diameter.
