Clarinet Solo with Band suggestions - arrangements
Author: DavidBlumberg
Date:   2013-09-06 18:17

Band Director wrote me asking for suggestions for a student I teach, who made the National Band - he wants to feature her with a solo piece with Band.

Rep wise, of course there's the Tichelli Blue Shades, but what Concerti, etc for a really good high level player with Band?

Any new arrangements out there?

Even a Military Band Arr. you've heard would be a possibility.

Black Dog would not be a good choice, though cool, hard, etc - looking for something more graspable by a non ICA audience :)

The Weber works are arranged but if your looking for something original try Oscar Navarro Concertos. He has band versions of them.

IMO, the Williams would be a good option. Here are some other, perhaps lesser known but IMO good quality works. You can probably find recordings of all of these on the internet. Some will require the Naxos Music Library. I don't know about availability of the sheet music.

Bencriscutto, Concertino
Clapperton, Bad News from the Desert
Daugherty, Brooklyn Bridge
Gilliland, Dreaming of the Masters (Swing Oriented - 14 minutes crowd pleaser)
Harvey, Three Utterances
Heins, Concertino
Liston, Jazz Suite
Maslanka, Desert Roads
Myers, Cadenza and Lament (recorded by Ed Palanker)
Oquin, Tower Ascending
Putz, Concerto
Reed, Rahoon
Schreiner, Immer Kleiner
Tichelli, Clarinet Concerto (not Blue Shades)
Walczyk, Concerto Sion
Wilson, Liquid Ebony
Young, Clarinet Rhapsody

Best regards,
jnk

I have a great arrangement for the Artie Shaw, "Concerto for Clarinet", that is available from the arranger but not published. The wind parts are playable by most average ensembles and is jazzy in nature. The solo is difficult, going up to double C at the end with some moderately challenging cadenza, but not out of the reach of a good high school clarinet player. The work is a definite crowd pleaser and a lot of fun to work on and play.

I'll run the ideas by her. I'm quite familiar with the Shaw, even in the past made an Accompaniment recording of it for study.

The Philip Sparke clarinet concerto is another great option. The third movement works well independently if the entire work is too long.

Hardy Mertens Concerto is awesome, but way difficult.

I could arrange the Aho Concerto for her, but it would be unplayable ;)

Martin Ellerby Concerto. There is a YouTube vid of Michele Gingras's sister playing it. Published and available.

The Messager Solo De Concours scores very well for clarinet and band. Weber 2 is another.
