I AM SAVING UP FOR A R-13 BUFFET CRAMPTON AND I NEED ADVICE I AM ONLY 13 SHOULD I GET A R-13 @ SUCH AN EARLY AGE I WANT CLARINETING TO BE MY PROFESSION I HAVE A E11 BUFFET CRAMPTON IS THAT GOOD TOO?

Slow down . . . you've got plenty of time. There are also lots of other great clarinets out there waiting to be tried. You've got a pretty good horn . . . why not embark on a learning period . . . learning all you can about different makes and models . . . before entering your buying period? I'm not trying to talk you out of an R-13 - I play one myself. But the search is part of the fun. Enjoy it!!

If you are 13, then I'm assuming that you are in 7th or 8th grade. That is not that young to be getting an R-13, especially in 8th grade, because by then you already have a good awareness of where you are in playing. I mean, you have solo and ensemble, select band, etc. as well as your teacher to recommend what instrument you should get. I got an R-13 in 8th grade, also. But, since you have an E-11 already, that's a pretty good clarinet too. If you are unhappy with it, then maybe you should trade it in and get credit for an R-13. I don't think that at 8th grade, though, unless you are good, that there is a distinguising factor between the R and E series.

I think that at 7th or 8th grade more emphasis should be placed on a good mouthpiece as long as the base equipment is good - and an E11 is a good basic instrument.

I agree with Mark, if you don't already have one, invest in a good mouthpiece. At the stage I was at in 7th and 8th grade, this did me a lot of good. You should wait at least until high school to buy a new horn. The one you've got is pretty good. If you are unsure whether or not you are ready to consider a new horn, you should probably wait. This <i>is</i> an important decision that you are making in purchasing a new horn. It should not be rushed. Take your time. I played on an old Vito resotone up until my senior year in high school, before I bought my R-13. It worked out fine for me. You have a considerably better situation. You've got a good horn. There isn't a need to hurry. I would recommend at least waiting until partway through your freshman year of high school. By then, you will have matured as a musician, as well as figured out better where you want to go with your playing. Be patient, it's worth the wait. -- Nate Zeien

I agree that you should wait to buy a new horn. Your current horn will probably last you a couple of more years. It still has many things to teach you. Spend your money and time on a new mouthpiece, on learning to work your reeds properly and, most importantly, on quality instruction. A good private teacher will help you get all the mileage out of your current horn and can let you know when it's holding you back. Good luck!

Lots of good advice given! For me, I played on a plastic Yamaha, until I couldn't stand it any further. I had a Vandoren mouthpiece, Rovner ligature and very good Vandoren reeds at the time. My sound was good and matured, but my horn was holding me back - (besides, I coveted the nice brown leather clarinet case!).
The R-13 is a very nice clarinet. One of the things I did for my brother was show him how to take care of his E-11. Is it well maintained? As I worked at a band shop in Irvine, I noticed that many intermediate students didn't know how to truly take care of their instrument.
Invest in an overhaul if it needs one. New mouthpiece, ligature, reeds, etc. If after all that, you still want/"need" a R-13, check your pawn shops first. I found mine for $400.
