 Is This A Tremelo, Or Played Like 16ths?

These half-notes with 16th note bars, how do you play 'em? Are they supposed to all be exactly 16th notes like first 2 beats, or do you simply trill between the two notes?

the rhythm should stay the same , all 16ths

It's done to save space and effort. I find it easier to read, too. I set my fingers going and look at the next group to see what changes.

Don't forget that a lot of these notation conventions evolved back when music was either hand copied or hand engraved on printing plates. Mostly they were meant to save labor.

But I agree with Ken, the shorthand is easier to read.
