Actually, "then what" is a really good question. I've looked at the orchestra management's "plans" for future years (as displayed on their website), and outside of a lot of corporate bafflegab, there's no there there. They seem determined, through draconian salary cuts and the attrition of a prolonged lockout, to pare the orchestra down to third-tier status, but to what end I can't imagine. Possibly the extravagantly renovated symphony hall will be used for non-symphonic or quasi-symphonic "tourist destination" thingys, in addition to the reduced symphony concert schedule they're also proposing, but management hasn't bothered to communicate specifics of their "vision" (sarcasm alert). They brought in George Mitchell (he who negotiated peace in Northern Ireland), but didn't like his recommendations and sent him on his way. They aborted an independent audit of the orchestra's books, preferring their own pet accountants' favorable audit. There's pretty clearly a larger purpose there; it's just not being enunciated to the public in any specific way whatever. (I have not looked at the full-page newspaper ad the orchestra management supposedly took over the weekend, so can't comment on it, but if it's anything other than tortured logic and outright distortion, I'd be surprised. But then, count me as a biased observer.)

Here's a list of the positions in the Minnesota Symphony's MARKETIMG department:
Director of Marketing, Single Ticket Sales & Audience Development
Director of Marketing, Subscription Sales & Audience Services
Group Sales Manager
Event and Facility Sales Manager
Marketing Manager
Manager of Concert Enhancements & Concessions
Group and Corporate Sales Coordinator
Manager of Database Marketing and Online Communications
Creative Director
Graphic Designer
Events & Services Manager
Events and Personnel Manager
Interactive Marketing Manager
Director of Ticket and House Services
Assistant Events and Personnel Manager
Ticketing Data Administrator
Manager of Ticket & Subscription Sales
I have to wonder if all these positions are really necessary and how many of these managers and directors actually generate enough money to cover their own salaries.
Best regards,
jnk
