How do I know what kind of clarinet I have?
Author: Arika

Hi! :) My name's Arika. I'm a sophomore, and I'm a total bandie, just for some background info. I'm actually a flautist. But I just got a really butt-freaking old clarinet from my gramma, and I was wondering how I could tell if it's a B flat or whatever, and if anyone had any info on my 'brand' of clarinet..it's called a...I don't know. It says J.E Ray on it, and it says Denver, New York. So If anyone knows anything about my clarinet, let me know, Ok? Thanks!

Arika

Assemble the clarinet completely including the mouthpiece but excluding the mouthpiece cap. Now measure the total length. Bb clarinets are close to 26.5 inches when fully assembled.

Double check this with a tuner. Play the note C on the clarinet (check a fingering chart if you are not a clarinet player). A Bb clarinet will register as the note Bb (or A# depending on how the tuner is designed). If it is an A clarinet, the note that is fingered as C will register as an A. It will probably be a bit out of tune since you are not a clarinet player and since this is an unknown brand of clarinet (some of these off brands were OK and some were terrible).

what does the key arangement look like....
does it have three or four trill keys ( holding the horn as if playing, would be on the right side upper joint , they would be the long keys )
on the lower does it have two or four keys for the little fingers?

need mor info... also any printing, numbers, colour of horn (ie: silver, black, brown, green )

Mike
