I was approached by the music director of our local music theater company to play in the upcoming Pirates of Penzance. He said the music switches back and forth between a Bb and an A clarinet. WHERE am I going to find an A clarinet? I don't want to buy one but I also don't want to rent a student-grade one. Any suggestions on where I would be able to rent one for about a month?

Do you know anyone that can lend you their A clarinet for the duration?

Assuming you're doing the original G&S operetta: download the part from IMSLP and start working out the transpositions. If an instrument doesn't turn up, you'll have a fallback plan. You will definitely need to know whether you'll be 1st or 2nd.

I agree that transposing would be a good method UNLESS you are required to play a low e. You could just pull the mouthpiece out a lot
