Perhaps you're thinking of the violin concerto arranged for clarinet (by Mikhail Pletnev)??

Mark is right. The Pletnev arrangement for Clarinet of the Beethoven Violin Concerto is marketed as "Beethoven's Clarinet Concerto". There is one recording of it at present, performed by Michael Collins.

The Pletnev arrangement for clarinet is recent, but by no means the first. I have another one at home in the key of C for the clarinet (Concert Bb). There might be others out there.

The interest of the Pletnev arrangement is that the piece remains in Concert D. The arrangement is for an A clarinet, hence allowing the clarinetist to play this devilishly difficult concerto in a normal key (F).

Anybody knows whether the Pletnev arrangement has been published?

This concerto sounds beautiful on the clarinet (if you discipline yourself not to try to compare the clarinet to the violon). The 3rd movement in particular is simply perfect for our instrument. It is on my list of pieces to learn in the next couple of years.

In this case it wasn't a joke - you might have actually stumbled upon a transcription, and there may be people around (not you, of course, you're a well-educated music student) who wouldn't realize that it was a joke. And, in fact, as you've now learned, there are transcriptions around of the Beethoven violin concerto.

So, don't be so condescending and smug. You've tons to learn.

I have to say it's a violin concerto. I think it sounds pretty lousy on clarinet. I know that violinists have much more rep than we do but still, it doesn't transfer well. I play violin too and the Beethoven is often considered THE HARDEST violin concerto to pull off decently because it has to be so pure. A clarinet just can't sing so far above the rest of the orchestra the way a violin can. However, the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 sounds great on clarinet.
