Hi there, I really need some help please. Just returned from a carboot where I thought it was a good idea to buy a clarinet for my sons so they could try it out. Ok it didn't have a mouthpiece but id seen on eBay previously that these aren't too pricey and as the instrument only cost £7 it hasn't broke the bank yet!
The difficulty I have however is two fold. Firstly please excuse my ignorance as I know nothing at all about clarinets!
1) the top bit with buttons on keeps coming off - I'm assuming there some cork missing that's keeps it in place?
2) I can't see how a mouthpiece can fit on the top as the connection point is tiny with a hole approx 7mm. Is this usual?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
By the way the make says its a Boosey & Hawke, London, Regent. There's a number on it that says 318281 if that means anything?

Hello Bev,
Seems that you have an oboe there and not a clarinet judging by the picture you attached. Probably a student instrument.

By "buttons," do you mean the keys? The sections of the instrument come apart? (By pulling, or by falling off?) Or do you mean that some of the keys fall off of the instrument?

The bore on some Regent oboes isn't great so you may encounter problems on the low notes from E downwards which can bubble and gurgle uncontrollably.
The top joint tenon (that fits into the lower joint socket) is notoriously weak on these oboes, so check that is intact. The serial number dates it to 1969-1970 so it's most likely made from bakelite which is a very hard and brittle plastic.
I had a 1983 Regent oboe when I started playing and that lasted me two years. I can't say I enjoyed playing it once I realised it was the instrument and not myself that was at fault, so the best thing that happened was it got knocked over and snapped in half at the middle tenon, so I stopped playing at that point, only to take it up ten years later when I tried a Marigaux that came in for repair and realised I could make a decent sound on a good instrument.

Thanks for the info Chris. The sound at this stage really doesnt matter so much as its for my ads to try and get musical, hence the car boot investment in the first place. There doesnt appear to be any broken bits of bakerlite on the instrument (actually i had thought it may be bakerlite), although once my lads try to enjoy it if i can sort a mouthpiece then there very well could be quite soon! lol x
