Last year, both here and on The Jazz Clarinet blog, I started a write-in campaign to get Pete Fountain elected to the DownBeat Hall of Fame. I'm happy to report the campaign was successful enough to get Pete on the ballot this year--no write-ins necessary.
Once upon a time, jazz clarinetists were regularly inducted in to the DB Hall of Fame, and when that happens there is usually a boost of awareness for the horn and its storied place in jazz.
It's my ultimate hope that, if we are successful in getting Pete in, someone with power to do so might finally re-release many of the classic jazz recordings he made for Coral records in the late 50s and early 60s, most of which are only available on out of print LPs, and many of which are cultural treasures that ought to be more widely available.
