Joshua Bell is playing the Tchaikovsky Concerto NOW at 2:50 pm Eastern, 11:50am Pacific, 20h30 Central European. After that and intermission you can hear Shostakovich 10. Valery Gergiev will conduct the National Youth Orchestra of the United States.

My pleasure....and the orchestra sounds GREAT on the Shostakovich!! Did you know that there are no conservatory students in this orchestra? If you are in a conservatory you are not allowed to audition!

Watched this on BBC TV yesterday
Great playing from all sections and the woodwind principals were really good.
Both 1st clarinetists had really good sound and the duet between 1st and 2nd in Shostakovich 10 went particularly well.
Any pupils of this board there?
Nice bassoon work too.
Whole orchestra showed total restraint from excess "emotive" gestures (was this Giergiev's influence??) but result looked and sounded all the better for it.
Just one niggle - who on earth chose that uniform of red pants and white sneakers/loafers?? Low angle shots of the band made the players legs look like a sea of red ants.
These young players deserve something much better than that.
