I had a 681 and at the time (when Yamaha was still in Grand Rapids) I asked the woodwing man, Mike Lutely, what the difference was between the 681 and 881.

I was told the 681 had insert tonehole while the 881 toneholes were integral.
same silver plate, same bore size, wood grade..

regarding intonation, you will not see/hear a difference.
