Advantages: prevents scratches to mouthpiece
Disadvantages: creates a high spot on mouthpiece so ligature may not be in consistent contact possibly resulting in a less stable fit.
If you are worried about scratches I would suggest using vinyl electrical tape instead of a mouthpiece patch. This will allow you to cut the tape to the proper length so that it will cover the whole circumference of the mouthpiece (except for the table) and will avoid any problems with high spots.

Some players use the patch because they don't like the feeling of the teeth on the MP or the vibrations bother them. Others use a thicker patch to help simulate the feeling of playing double lip while playing single lip. In some cases it helps open up the oral cavity somewhat. I didn't use a patch for my first 40 years as a pro then I tried a few and ended up using a thin patch because I began to like the feeling. Experient with a few different thicknesses and see if it makes a difference for you.

I think he meant "under the ligature" itself, not on the bite area. Yes/No?
