I attended this performance so I know that Steven Cohen is playing principal in these recordings from the 2013 Brevard Music Center season.

Just listened to the big Pines solo beginning at 53:44. Like all Cohen performances, it's amazingly even and controlled, perfectly in tune -- and with not even 1% of the expressiveness the music calls for. For what it needs, listen to the principal flutist, Joshua Smith, who enters just after the first iteration of the clarinet solo at 55:08.
And for the Roman legions on the Appian Way, it's Toscanini or nobody.

I don't know. The F# and E's sounded low for my ear.
I had a really disappointing time when I went to Brevard. I had no clue that the festival orchestra was filled with the professors until I got there. All the amazing music I think most students and I went there to partake in was reserved for the professors enjoyment.
It meant that the majority of our summer was spent sitting on a stoop. I left Brevard early that year.
