This video has inspired a lot of trouble for me....

After seeing this a few months ago, I was issued with a challenge which made my head explode.

I play alto sax in a street band. Our full lineup is 2 trumpets, 2 clarinets, 2 alto saxes, 3 tenor saxes, trombone, sousaphone, 2 drummers. In one rehearsal which was nearly all reeds, our leader came up wth an idea inspired by this video. 3 players on one clarinet - one person blowing, one person for each hand. Play concert C major scale, one octave. Fairly straightforward once we worked out which B & C# to use just above the break. A second team were doing the same thing on a tenor sax.

So far, so good.

Then it got silly. We stood in a line alternating fingerers and blowers. At one end, clarinet left-hand fingerer. Then Clarinet blower. Then the next person (me) was clarinet right-hand fingerer AND tenor sax left hand fingerer, arms crossed over. Then sax blower. The next person was right-hand fingerer on one tenor sax, and left-hand fingerer on another tenor sax. Then tenor 2 blower, then tenor 2 fingerer. The idea was to all play the Concert C scale, 1 octave.

Ever tried playing 2 instruments at once? 2 different instruments?? One third of 2 different instruments??? My head exploded. How the Mnozil Brass guy played 4, I'll never know.

We never took it any further.

Roger that, Mike--I have enough trouble with just one clarinet. That Mnozil guy must have been an octopus in his previous life.

Beyond the reality of being carbon-based life forms, the Mnozil guys are not like us. It takes a particular breed of musician to do what they do. What a special bunch of entertainers. Love 'em.
