David Pino's book "The Clarinet and Clarinet Playing" is again available. The good folks at Dover Publications have reprinted it as a quality paperback for $9.95 list. If your local store does not have it, you can order it, as I did, through clicking the amazon.com button on this website.
This book's 300 pages cover clarinet playing, history, music, reeds, and a number of other topics. It is dedicated to Pino's teacher Keith Stein, but is broader in scope and differs in emphasis from Stein's excellent book.
Pino's book is in some ways unique, such as in its coverage of double tonguing, teaching philosophy, practice philosophy, string ligatures, and a detailed description of Erick Brand's system of measuring mouthpiece facings. This book belongs right alongside the Kroll, Rendall, Stein and Brymer clarinet books as a genuine classic.
At Dover's low price the book is simply a steal. Every clarinetist should own a copy. Highest recommendation. Bravo to Dover Publications for their reprint and special heartfelt thanks to David Pino, wherever he may be.
