Arturo Márquez - Danzón Nº 2 - Morales solo
Author: GBK
Date:   2013-07-23 00:00

Ricardo Morales with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2011.

A video which I hadn't seen before:

Unfortunately, orchestra wise, the kids from Venezuela play it with more feeling:

For me, the only Berlin player worth listening to was Albrecht Mayer, the principal oboist who can do no wrong. The orchestra (and the audience) treated it as wallpaper -- music to light sparklers to.

Frankly, Ricardo was dull. The kid in Dudamel's orchestra played it with heart as well as good tone. And the orchestra played this fair-to-middling music for all it was worth, a thrill, rather than the look-down-their-noses this-is-beneath-us attitude from the jelly doughnuts -- err, the Berliners.

I've always thought this rendition of the Danzon was one of the weakest. Could be the mic, but the projection is terrible from Ricardo, and the feeling is no where near the same as from the Simon Bolivar Orchestra. Ricardo is one of my favorite clarinetists, but this isn't one of my well-liked recordings.

Although the Berliner was more lively than it has probably ever been, the Simon Bolivar was fresher and more sensitive than the Berliner...it showed far greater dynamic sensitivity...one could hear each featured instrument clearly in the Bolivar, but not the Berliner. And Morales seemed muted--almost a captive of the staid Berliner gestalt. I almost wished that he'd played with the Bolivar as well...but I'm glad that the Bolivar's clarinetist had the opportunity to play with his colleagues.

The Berlin percussionists at 7:50 look like they're having a GREAT time!

And that Venezuelan Oboist ain't no slouch!

Thanks for providing the contrast! Does anyone know what the venue is for the Berlin concert? What a lovely place!

Local natural acoustics plus synthetic ones (mics, placement, processing, etc) make it difficult to differenciate between players as they would otherwise sound.

Albrecht Mayer shows again how Captivating a performer he is. Ricardo is also excellent.

I thought that the player(s) in the second clip really played with life and passion. It made for a very musical and enjoyable performance.

Realized I'm performing this in the fall and hadn't heard it before. I think I've just fallen in love! Listened to several recordings.

I think right now Bil Jackson and Colorado is my favorite. Mr. Jackson just sounds fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdlPHfQtCSI Some of the opening is cut off and it is recorded with a cell phone I think but his playing still shines though.

I thought the Berliners sounded like they were playing Brahms' 4th symphony. Thery don't hold a candle to the Venezuelan kids.

Thanks for these links! Dudamel is one of my favorite conductors.

The music was new to that Berliner audience -- notice how some of them start applauding just before the allegro finale. Morales looked a bit stiff, yes, but to me he sounded excellent. The Philharmonic didn't seem staid to me at all in this one -- jiving in their seats!

I absolutely love Dudamel conducting those kids. He deserved to make it to the big leagues, and I'm glad for him, but I hope his exceptional leadership with his youth orchestra inspires other musicians to see potential in new places. I never would have guessed from watching that some of those kids come from the favelas (slums). Without him they'd never have had lessons or instruments to play on.

It did not sound as if RM was up to playing the clarinet for this recording. A "here we go again" kind of effort, not characteristic nor representative of his true abilities as a musician. For me, the star of the performance was the oboe soloist whose phrasings and tone quality were spot on.

Morales plays the solos in a subtle, cool, and dispassionate way on his cocobolo Mo-Ba. For more heat, he could have used the Grenadilla model instead. But he was, after all, in the midst of Germans, who generally shun bright colors and keep their distance when speaking to one another.
