 Clarinet solo with band accomp

I am going to be a senior in college next year, and the director of bands had invited me to play a solo with the wind ensemble next semester. I am asking what are some good solos that show off technical ability and great musicality and would be interesting enough for high schoolers to listen to on a tour type situation? I'm also looking for something not in the ordinary vein, such as the Mozart concerto, Weber concertino, or any of the weber concertos for that matter. Weve been kicking around the possibility of the Stravinsky Ebony concerto, the bernstein Prelude fugues and riffs (of course these don't use full wind band that we know) What newer literature is out there something written recently if anyone knows of something it would be great to get some new literature out there in front of some high school and other college bands.

Wow you got guts! Three I can think of that might be suitable (don't forget your battle armor in that environment) Morton Gould's "Derivations For Clarinet and Band" (15-piece cut-down jazz ensemble). Benny's recording is probably the most famous and compulsory listening, also I'm certain John Yeh did a recording of it with the Depaul jazz ensemble about 8 years ago.

John Heins' "Concerto for Clarinet and Band" (contemporary piece for full band, pro-quality, grade 7). This piece was written by a former US Air Force clarinetist, pianist, composer. Exciting although difficult 10-minute work, Stravinsky-like but with more meter changes, multiple tempos and very note-y. Chuck West recorded it in 1995.

"Clarinet Sonata" by David Baker, I called the publisher to purchase a second copy (piano reduction/score) & was informed it's only for rental now. Outstanding
16-minute 3-movement work. Combines blues, jazz riffs/rhythms with a brisk Latin shaker dance.

BTW, Hunsberger has a new published arrangement of the 3rd movement of the Mozart out, superbly written as with everything he pens.

I have done the Artie Shaw CONCERTO FOR CLARINET with our local concert band (it's a real jazzy crowd-pleaser, sounds hard but really isn't), but the rental parts are only available for orchestra and I had to re-write certain string parts to make it work for band.. This could be, however, an opportunity for a talented student arranger in your music department to do an arrangement for your wind ensemble featuring you as "Artie.". I know that this was done for John-Bruce Yeh at DePaul and for Jack Snavely at UW-Milwaukee for their Japan tour. I understand, also, that the original Artie Shaw arrangement for jazz ensemble ("Dance Band' back then) is still being used by the Artie Shaw Orchestra which is still occassionally on tour, but that they are reluctant to lend it out to "just anybody." Again.....Artie Shaw's CONCERTO FOR CLARINET, a great showpiece for the clarinet and a crowd pleaser for audiencies of all ages and political affiliation. Good clarineting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :>)
