When people take those those examinations (http://www.abrsm.ac.uk/clarinet.html) to get into a higher grade thing, how well do they learn the pieces? Like well enough to perform the pieces in front of an audience?
How much time to most people spend on preparing? Foir the typical student taking the examination, are the pieces like overwhelmingly difficult and they have to spend like months workign on them? Or is it like an easy thing and they spend like a month working on them?
What level are most students entering conservatories at? grade 8?
what grade do you think American kids in all-state bands are in? (i'm in ny)

hi
about the associated board exams
there are 8 initial grades and these really are a good basic grounding but people may have grade 8 but have little performance experience - the next stage on ie the former advanced certificate or the new dip abrsm concentrate more on performance
there are three pass levels for grade exams - pass, pass with merit or pass with distinction
in the uk many students who go on to music college will often have grade 8 with distinction and may in reality be at a much higher level than that
i hope this answers your query

Hi Tammy.
I've been through the ABRSM examination system to the end and to answer your question, I think the pieces (usually two accompanied pieces...I chose the allegro con fuoco from Poulenc's Sonata and the first movement from Mozart's Clarinet concerto for the grade 8... and one 'study') need to be practiced to a level where a competent performance can be given. From speaking to several friends who also endured this, we all spent some considerable time (several or many months) preparing the pieces and even longer learning all those scales!! The average music student entering say the Royal College of Music or other similar establishment has Grade 8 (distinction) under their belt long before they go to college. I hope this helps calibrate you.
Best regards
