 Stereo from Mini Disc Recording
Author: Ginny

I am thinking of getting a mini disc recorder, not planning on burning CDs off of them.

Do they really record in stereo? They have only one mic input? and there'd be no separation.
Would they really only replace my old Marantz portable tape deck then?

DAT seems like overkill from my level of interest at this time.

I take it I'd be able to get stereo recording by running a mixer (with my mikes) into the line input of my computer? The built in recording (MS) software really stinks big time, what's cheap and good?

I have some old but used to be considered decent mikes (shure SM58, EV PL76s) but I take it those can't be used with the mini disc, even with adaptors.

Thanks, Ginny

They record in stereo! It's a stereo input jack. The separation is just fine - check the specs on the one you're looking at buying. The line input & optical inputs are also stereo.

I believe they can. You'll need an adaptor or possibly phantom power. It depends on the mike.

Ginny,

The mics you have are just fine. Those mics are both dynamic not condensers. (no phantom power needed)
If you have a small mixer all you will need is an adapter that goes from whatever the output of the mixer is; to 1/8 inch stereo mini to get into the line input of the minidisc.

Good Recording!
