I recently purchased a Buffet clarinet with a serial #43647. From what I can find online it was made sometime in the early to mid 50's. Is this correct? And what would it be considered? Is it an R13? There are no other markings besides the serial number and the buffet crampon label.

It's probably not what we consider an R13 (polycylindrical) - that serial number puts it around 1950-51.

Mark, are you sure about that? I checked out the website at Boosey & Hawkes. According to their serial number list, the horn would date from 1953. Just plug in the serial number, and that its a Buffet soprano clarinet, and it runs it through the database. Where did you find the date of 1950-1951 for that serial number? To get to their serial number database, click the following link.

I wonder which one is right. Still, it narrows things down a bit. -- Nate Zeien

Ah! A Buffet flute of that serial number would have the same year of manufacture as Mark came up with. Perhaps you may want to double check that, Mark. :-) -- Nate Zeien

Nate,
Check here on Sneezy, which is from the official Buffet lists. They are estimating the age in the listing on the Buffet site, too, and in fact I've found some inaccuracies in their automated listing (which I reported to them).
