I needed a professional clarinet in the key of A because i grown out of my E11 in A. So I ordered 2 used rc prestiges and a festival. I was told by my teacher's experience with trying r13 prestige A clarinets and how it felt resistant and sounded stuffy. He told me that i feel that the clarinets that i'm receiving will sound very compact, not loud as in it wont fit in with the loudness of american orchestras, and that it will be stuffy. What are your knowledges on these clarinets vs the r13? I have personally tried rc Bb and loved it more than i did than my r13 Bb though i agree the sound wasnt as big, but only by so slightly that it was totally fine

How can anyone make that kind of judgement on an instrument they haven't played? RC Prestige and Festival A clarinets aren't R13 Prestiges, so they will be different. If you happen to like any of them, then buy the one you like best - it's you that'll be playing it and not your teacher.
Tell your teacher not to be so narrow minded.

The RC models (and there are RC R13s too) do tune differently (kinda oddly) in the altissimo mostly.
For me the Prestige is on the bright side (it's always been the NEW COKE of Buffet as far as I'm concerned). But I wouldn't say one Buffet of ANY model is any less able to fit into a section than another, just that the more expensive models are perhaps pricey without giving you much in return (only a slightly different take on the sound).
I would say that the R13 is and always has been a really reliable model with no need to look further in the Buffet line.
Now there is always Selmer, Yamaha, Rossi.................

If you are not going to follow your teacher's advice, why take lessons?
Your statement that you are going to "to break the norm of only playing r13's" is ridiculous. Wait until you are a successful professional before making such lofty pronouncements.

I have played on r13 A's, like several of my friend's including my teacher's, and I did not like how it felt and sounded so I decided not to buy r13's when i compared with other models. Yes, my statement of breaking the norm was unconscious of me, but i had to not follow my teacher on this one.

I played mainly R13 Bb clarinets and RC A clarinet my last 10 years (or thereabout) in the National Symphony Orchestra. No conflicts with colleagues who were playing Prestiges, Selmer Recitals and Selmer 10g's. I think your teacher is an ass!

- Generally matched sets are the best way to go most of the time.
- Buffet is so inconsistent that two clarinets that actually "match" could be two completely different models.
- Teachers forcing antiquated opinions about equipment is infuriating.
- You don't need to play on a certain brand horn to blend.
- Shaming a student on a thread for wanting a different type of clarinet than their teacher recommended is in poor taste.
- Most teachers have their students best interests at heart.

Yes. And a teacher better shows you how to blend in, as this is about listening to others which is the key to ensemble playing.
