 Where for repairs?
Author: Sandee

I just returned to clarinet after about 20 years away. I bought a C clarinet - Noblet- with the intention of continuing to play in a contradance band, maybe try some klezmer. What a wonderful instrument! Sometimes it make me sound like I know what I'm doing! (Still getting my chops back, but the low notes are powerful and the high ones suck.....)

Any how, should I ever need repairs, or customization of some sort, whose a good repairer in S.E. Michigan? I live in Ann Arbor, to be exact.

Thanks!

Contact your local university's clarinet professor for advice. They are usually quite knowlegable and willing to help fellow clarinetists. I own a Buffet E-11 C clarinet and also find it fun to play. Good clarineting!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not Michigan, but it's not a terribly far drive. But in Chicago, (Lombard to be exact) Rick Sayre does fine work.

My repair guy in Davenport, Iowa, Denny Lawson, is a fantastic repair/custom workman. I always take my horns to him on Spring Break (i drive up from Houston) and he does great work for very reasonable price.
Here in Houston, i took my clarinet to get three pads replaced, but they guy did 7 pads and charged me $120 and gave me a lecture about the poor workmanship of my repair guy, then i took my horn to Denny and he did the same pads as well as work to my other two clarinets and two saxes for less all-together than the cost of the jerk in Houston.

I don't know who i would trust with my horns if i hadn't met Denny.

Best of luck,
Daniel
