I found a Selmer BT clarinet. All the keys are tooken off and stuff, but look to be in good condition, just needs to be cleaned and keys put back on. I was wondering how much would it cost to put it into playing condition and looking great?
I currently own a Selmer Special, but want something else pro or higher level. Would this Selmer BT be great?

Selmer BT's are highly sought after instruments by those who are vintage Selmer afficionado's. I play a Selmer BT as my main instrument. I was using a Centered Tone, but it is now my backup clarinet. I still enjoy playing it. Some say the "M" series BT's are better than the "L" series, but I've played both and can't really tell that much difference. I think it would be worth fixing up. I charge $206 for a complete overhaul with bladder pads. Cork pads are extra. You can use these prices for comparison.

If keys need buffing that effectively destroys the pads and key corks.
If the rods are all does this mean there is no sign of rust?
There COULD be many time consuming parts to this job: Sloppy pivots? Bent, biniding pivot tubes? Imperfect tone hole edges? Wobbly centre tenon?
So it amounts to a complete overhaul. A cheap job is likely to be superficial. An expensive one is no guarantee of quality. You need to research a repairer for quality of workmanship. Ask a range of well established teachers and capable players in your area. Then get an estimate from that repairer. Not enough info without seeing the instrument to be more specific, but others can tell you typical prices in your country, which is?

This would not be a good risk for you as you don't have the background to properly evaluate the condition of the instrument. It could easily cost you $200 to $300 to get it put back together and overhauled only to find that there are other problems. This type of purchase is for someone who can do their own basic work so they can determine if it is good enough to get that complete overhaul. So the purchaser needs to be both a good clarinet player and have fundamental repair skills.

Dee is correct. I am currently the high bidder (if it is the one on eBay). I don't know how much the reserve is. If the seller has it too much higher than my bid it isn't even worth it for me.......and I repair instruments. I have to evalueate the purchase price/labor and materials cost VS how much I can sell it for after it is restored. Typically, on eBay people don't want to pay more than $500 for them in good shape. Example: If I bought it for $200 then put another $206 in labor and parts into it and then sell it for $500 I "ain't" making much money and it isn't worthwhile. If I can afford to tie up my money for awhile and wait to sell it locally for $600 to $800 then it is worthwhile. So, if the reserve is less than $200 I would consider a bidding higher. I'm waiting to see if someone meets reserve to decide future action.

The reserve is 300... I e-mailed them and asked. What if I found a nice Selmer BT, but say like the Bell wasn't original.. would that matter??

Don't purchase any instrument unitl you get a chance to play it. The instruments you metioned, Selmer BT, Yamaha 64/34, Signet Special all have pros and cons.
Buying instuments off of eBay can be fun, but it also has it's risks, you could very easily purchase what you think is a great instrument, only to find out it is a piece of junk. If you have a limited budget and knowledge about instruments, try working with your teacher or local music store.

My local music stores have no wood clarinets... nor to they ever get any in.. As from the few about 2 hours away they have used ones for around 800.. new ones 2,500 and up.. Plastic models are around 500.. There very high around here. I have called every place I know of around here and none have pro clarinet or inter. clarinets.
I want to purchase a clarinet better than the one I have now. I was thinking of a Yamaha YCL-34, but is that better than a Selmer Special? I have a Selmer Special and it needs some repairs.. Its has a few chips out of it and wood is cracking(barrel and bell)...

Deejay, another option that you might consider (I think I would consider it if I were in your position) is to contact a J. Butler or a Dave Spiegelthal and find out what they have available used. They are both players and know both condition and quality. You will probably pay more than bargain basement on ebay and less than a high retail shop, but in return you would get a horn that was properly evaluated. There may be others that could be added to this list, but those are the guys that come to mind.

How can I contact J. Butler or Dave Spiegelthal?
I found someone with a Buffet C-12 clarinet for sale. The lady who has it plays clarinet professionaly. Its in really good condition and only needing a few pads. Theres no chips or cracks in it. Would it be a good buy?

John is a sponsor - you can find him in the Sponsor's section. Dave posts regularly - do a search and you'll find his address.

You can also check the classifieds here on sneezy where both John Butler ("bandtech") and Dave Spiegelthal have horns listed. Another frequent poster also has another E&S Master Model for sale - potentially a very nice horn.
