 OT: Selling a good instrument

Hi

This is not about a clarinet but I thought someone here might have a good direction or information that might help.

A friend of mine is trying to sell an excellent violin. It's not a Stradivarius or anything like that but it's still worth enough that it can be a big problem selling it in our country (according to a couple of the best violin experts in the country). It's probably not anywhere near the most expensive in the violin world, but it's high enough for it to be very difficult to sell here (at least far more than any clarinet, but probably "modest" in violin terms).

We are looking for places and ways to sell it overseas. It could be worth flying somewhere to sell it if that is necessary.

It's a French violin and was officially appraised by a French violin expert. We have the signed authorization certificate.

Any direction please...?

Thank you

There is a specific auction house in London that deals in sting instruments, I'll get the info for you. I would also suggest you try and contact the sting museum at the Royal Academy of Music. They have a fine collection of instruments which get used. The details will be in their website.

I don't know how things are now, but Christie's (mentioned above) used to have specialist musical instrument auctions with an extensive strings auction.

I had to sit through one 20 years back which took at least two hours while there for the woodwinds, but they later put the strings on after the brass, woodwinds and keyboards. An American buyer I was sat next to was bidding on all the old French violins.
