Tone hole spacing

Does someone know why the tone hole spacing between the chalameau C and the the Bb or the clarion G and the F is such a long distance? This doesn't seem to make sense that the tone holes are so close together between the chalemeau C and D or the A and the B. How is this mathmatically possible?

It all makes sense if you call the toneholes by the notes that issue from them - if you've got a bare clarinet body with all the toneholes visible, all will be clear.

I'll take a photo of a clarinet body with no keywork and label it so you can see what's going on in a bit.
