I have played the clarinet for 5 years now and still play on a plastic Yamaha YCL-20. I am going to buy a new clarinet soon and at a music store close to me they have a used Evette & Schaeffer for sale. The serial number is K18xxx. I was wondering if this clarinet was worth looking into.

Try it. But before buy. Some of these were excellent.

The serial number indicates that the clarinet was made sometime between 1966 and 1969. The good news is that this clarinet was made during the period many clarinetists and repair techs consider to be Buffet's "Golden Age." Generally speaking, I think E&S clarinets from this period were well made from good wood. The bad news is that it has been around long enough to have developed serious problems if it wasn't well-cared-for during the entire period since it was made. I think the clarinet is worth looking into but I think you should play test it thoroughly and evaluate it carefully. If you have a teacher who is a good clarinetist, I would recommend you have him/her evaluate it carefully as well.
Best regards,
jnk
