I have an R-13 I purchased several years ago from Munci Winds. It needs a good tuneup and/or overhaul. I don't want to ship it back to Munci. The shipping concerns me. I live in Pinehurst, NC which is abot 90 miles from Raleigh. Is there a good technician in Raleigh (or maybe Greensboro). I hear Marsh Woodwinds does a good job on saxophones (don't know about clarinets). Need some help/advice. Thank you in advance.

I also felt weird sending my clarinet out by mail, but I simply found no one within 100 miles or more that I thought would do a good job. I finally ran out of options and carefully (very very carefully) boxed up my R13. The case was wrapped in bubble wrap and the cardboard box was lined with scraps of styrofoam and filled with peanuts. I calculated that unless the box was run over by a truck it would be safe. I was more concerned about temperature stress in transit than physical damage due to impact. Wesley Rice was the tech I sent the horn out to (in Maryland) and he left the horn for a day to acclimate to the new environment before testing it, as did I when it arrived back. For the additional $50 to $60 dollars that the horn cost me in shipping I am quite pleased with the result. Some techs just don't care enough or perhaps don't have enough spare time with all the school band work they do to give a fine instrument real attention. Mr. Rice is not one of those people. He does care and does fine work. There are a number of good techs I believe who advertise their services and their work is also highly prized. An extra hour of boxing and an extra $60 or so dollars in cost wouldn't disuade me from using the better techs, rather than just driving 90 miles to someone who may or may not be better than your local guy. An overhaul or semi overhaul deserves the attention of the better techs. A tenon cork or a couple of pads can be given to whoever is reasonably competent in your area. Mr. Rice didn't even charge more than my local guys would and maybe less. For major work, I'd send it out unless I lived next to one of the top guys.

My advice is to either get over the aversion to shipping the horn, or just drive down and back to Muncy twice (dropping off and picking up).
There are NOT that many truly competent repair shops out there that will put the kind of work into a clarinet that YOU put into your horn when you practice. Phil Muncy (and his team) is one such shop in the country.
Having lived in Chicago for many years I got a bit spoiled with having one of the best shops local to me. After many years away from the "Second City," I have a healthy appreciation for just how rare this is.

Sounds like I'll ship it to Muncy. Need it for a July 4th concert. Will ship after that. Use my old Evette Schaefer in the interim. Thanks to all of you.

You may be able to call him and depending on his time, and how much work is needed, he may be able to do some work while you're there. I have a friend that drives here from Arizona every now and again (he went to school with me in Winston), and waits while Muncy works on his clarinet.

Matt Stohrer is in Durham NC which according to Google is about half an hour from Raleigh. Gogole him, his website says mostly saxophones but I would ask him about clarinets.
