Neat - I embedded the video on my Facebook page...
We had those little b******s here in St. Louis 2 years ago - what a noisy, and then smelly mess!

We get them here every year for a couple of months. After a while your brain just switches them out, and you only notice when they stop.

They haven't come out of the ground yet in my neighborhood, but I'm looking forward to them. True, they get to be a nuisance when a few million of them fetch up dead on the sidewalks and make a yucky mess when people step on them, but what fascinating critters. The other animals around here gorge on cicadas at first -- All You Can Eat Buffet! -- but after awhile even the local feral cats get fed up. "Oh, no, not cicadas for breakfast again. Pfui!"

So you hatch, burrow underground and eat dirt for 17 years, come out, reproduce for a few days and die.
And some people disappear into Juilliard practice rooms for 4 years....

That's better than the Mayfly -- hatch, molt, emerge, mate and die in 24 hours.
