Same as today. Leblanc, Buffet, Selmer, and Yamaha. These companies have all been in business for over 100 years.

So what would you clasify a Leblanc Noblet 27 as?

Depends what you mean by older
1960 to the present, pretty much the big three

In 1930, a lot of companies that are gone now or merged were making top quality instruments. Cousnon, Bettoney, Penzel Muller, Conn & Whitecome to mind. My experience is with pro quality metal clarinets. Many are quite good and can be bargains compared to the sort of student horn $300 would buy you today. However, they are not as good as the current pro quality horns.

The LeBlanc 27 on eBay is a Noblet 27. An intermediate clarinet. It compares somewhat to the Noblet 40 or 45 of today.

The Noblet 27 was an intermediate level clarinet.

Yamaha started making musical instruments in 1887 (reed organs). Check the logo (especially on the motorcycles). 3 crossed tuning forks!

To expand on Mark's comment a bit, Yamaha was making musical instruments long before they ever started motorcycles. The old man sent his son on a world tour to learn and bring back instrument manufacturing technologies. Instead the son became enamoured of motorcycles and convinced the old man to also go into motorcycle production.

By the way, I have seen one clarinet in the past on eBay from fairly early in Yamaha's history based on the case style. That case style implied pre-1920.

Just got a S-1 Buffet made in 1975. Plays beautifully, great tone. Little larger bore. A great used vintage horn.
Noblet, Normandy these are intermediate clarinets. Not bad but not a pro level horn.
