Hi,

can anyone confirm whether the current CSG is stained or unstained.

Thanks

Why does it matter? All my Buffets, ranging in age from 1908 to the early 1970s, are stained.

I think that makers started touting unstained grenadilla several years ago to create an imaginary quality difference. In my experience, it does not.

Don't know about the current ones, but the first GSGHs appeared unstained. Yamaha definitely don't use the same deep purple dye that Buffet use, but they do use an oil finish on their clarinets. They vary as some have been polished to a brilliant shine whereas others are left with a dull scratched finish (like Buffet Prestiges). I've even seen a lacquer finish on some Custom series oboes.

The opinions I express are my own.

WRT yamaha oboes, I've only seen the lacquer on the pad seats of the violetwood oboes, but I haven't examined that many.

I had a CSG-II (which is the European CSG-III -- don't know why there are two designations) on trial a couple of weeks back. The wood was stained.

Stained or unstained has nothing to do with the playability, it is purely cosmetic. Imo unstained looks better, especially if the wood has a nice deep grain.

Hmm, I thought that was a simple question.

Backstory - I'm going to buy more clarinet than I am clarinetist, and that's partially to own a thing that's beautiful to look at and hold, as well as play. Obviously, I agree with Mr Cigleris.

Thanks
