Hi, I'm playing Eb clarinet in a wind orchestra and then next concert programme includes Adam Gorb's Yiddish Dances which has some SERIOUS Eb solos.
My only problem is one sustained top E (above the stave), which is very exposed. The normal 2 fingers and register key fingering is a little too flat to lip up and maintain without wavering, I've tryed adding and removing combinations of the Eb key and every other "silver " key I can get my fingers near but nothing seems stable.
Does anyone know of any completely alternative fingers I can try (this note has a rapid run up to it in F if that makes any difference).

Try playing clarion G (left hand fingers down) and opening the throat Ab key with the side of your left index finger. This usually pops a stable and reliable E. The tone tends to blare, so you have to keep from playing too loud.

If its really that flat, try saving your lips and just let an F go really flat...without opening the right hand "Eb" key that you usually use. Plopping the tuner on your stand before the passage helps too if you can select the pitch or it will detect the pitch youre playing. I do that alot when i have a high solo note <like the ungodly Altissimo D in Dvorak Finale from New World Symp>

Lindy,
Ken's suggestion is a good one. You can also use the little key between RH 2&3, or simply use the RH 4 F/C key instead of the Ab/Eb key. This fingering works on most instruments and is more stable than the L. index throat Ab key.
