I'm looking for a new ligature that adds better response and a little darker sound to my clarinet. Anybody know of good ligatures?

Mouthpieces and barrels have more effect on tone than ligatures IMHO.

I would say though that the extremes would be a very thin metal ligature (brighter) vs. a thick, solid vinyl pouch design like the Rovner. The Rovner Light is a good, inexpensive ligature for all occasions.
For a start though, you can just try releasing as much tension on your present ligature as possible. That is, just place it over the reed and barely tighten at all. This will in affect take most of the color of the ligature out of the equation.

Two things come to mind. The Rovner Versa allows you to modify the ligature 6 different ways. It does change the timbre and responsiveness. The other thought would be to use a string ligature. I've just learned to tie one. I'll let you know how it goes.

I find the mouthpiece makes the most difference in sound followed by ligature and then the barrel. I like to keep my ligatures tight.

Try a büttfer. They are from Austria, but a lot of the top players here in New York are playing them. Players here simply cannot say enough great things about their büttfers: best piece of equipment they own.
They would definitely give you a dark sound. Resistance and response depends, of course.

Rovner would be a good one to try. I love them, but many others don't. You will just have to try and see what is best for you.

Once you've found the MP and barrel you like then a ligature can make a little bit of difference, especially in response but they can make a tone a little darker or brighter. The only way you will know what works for you is to try several. Perhaps you can ask one of the major mail order shops if they would send you several on approval. I'd suggest trying several of the Rovners. You can go to his website to read about them, there very good and affordable. What plays one way for someone may not have the same effect for you.

Hey all. I just found the new Rovner Versa X ligature. any comments on this? i'm considering trying this out big time. out of all the ligatures i've found this seems like a really good idea.

You are too fast with the edit-fu, Jason.
I think that two dudes one ligature is an interesting discussion, however. I lent mine to a colleague in orchestra, but it did not darken his sound as it did mine: he preferred his Rovner. Nevertheless, I think my büttfer is as fine a product as anything Rovner makes.

For the price of the Rovner Versa X and pocket change, you can get a Rovner Dark and a Rovner Light. That's all I've ever needed, and my reshaped $5 Martin is better than either (though not as good as string).

Has anyone ever done a blind-folded testing with various ligatures? I guess the shape/feel of them might give the identity of said ligature away. I might enlist my husband to help compare the four I possess. Could be a new party game LOL. I suspect much of it might be in the mind?

This is not a trivial point that you bring up. One's state of mind as they play IS the most important factor, is it not? Would you continue to play if Simon Rattle himself wanted you for Berlin but you couldn't stand one second of the sound you perceived coming out of your horn?
For me, if something makes you feel better about your playing, who cares what the "masked man" thinks.
