 Bundy Contra Alto Specifications
Author: rawsound

Fellow Contra Artists,

I'm playing on a Bundy Contra Alto and am trying to have a custom swab made for it. I've contacted Omar Henderson at Doctor's Products about making a contra version of their Black Legend Swab and need to supply him with some critical specifications. I'm wondering if anyone on here would have the information i need.

Bore size: .987"

Body length (including the metal top joint): ??????

Protruding register tubes in the interior of the instrument: ??????
(would need to know if there are any, and how far they protrude into the bore)

Thanks in advance for your help and expertise.

A bass clarinet swab with a longer string should work.

A BC swab will work as Steve said. I own a play a Rosewood model that comes apart at the mid joint, but adding a lenght of twine should do nicely. I actually did this for my Leblanc Paperclip contra and it works fine!

I agree with Steve Ocone and LCL. For my Bundy contra-alto, I added about a foot of extra string to the cord on an Ann Hodges silk bass clarinet swab. I used string I'd saved from an old swab.

As others have suggested, I use a lengthened bass clarinet swab on my Bundy contra alto. Beware! knots will snag on the register vents. I added a new length of cord and then wrapped the knots and protruding ends with thread. Even so it's a nuisance shaking them around the bend at the top, so I never even try to do this at a band practice, only at home.

Hodge makes a sausage-like swab for the curly tip of a baritone sax, and it may be the right tool. I haven't managed to get my hands on one and don't want to order it sight unseen.

If somebody just made a bass clarinet swab with a long enough cord, it would be a good contribution to all of us dozens of contra alto players.

I should have remembered to mention that I don't use my extended bass clarinet swab in the curved neck of the contra-alto. I take the neck, the bell and the mouthpiece off before swabbing. I run the extended bass clarinet swab through the bell and through the body of the clarinet separately. For the neck, I use an ordinary (unmodified) silk swab for soprano clarinet.
