 Cane Reed Allergy
Author: tangborn

Does anyone besides me have a cane reed allergy? I can only play on a cane reed for a couple of days before I break out. I use a plastic reed for practice, but have not found one that is good enough to use for concerts.

I don't have an allergy to cane, but I can see how this be difficult for you. I've tried both Fibrecell and Legere. The Legere Signature line is supposed to be their best. I know that the sweet spot and emboucher is different.

Have you tried the plastic covered Rico's? They might work.

Legere is probably your best bet. It is important to get the exact strength you need.I may have a Fibracell I can send you (no charge). Email me the strength you need and I'll check when I get to my shop.

I developed a sensitivity to cane in my mid-20s-- my nose and throat would become irritated by contact. Fortunately, Legeres hit the market just around that time, and they actually work better for me than cane.

My advice--mess around with Legeres and other synthetics, along with mouthpieces, until you find something that works. There are an increasing number of custom mouthpieces guys out there who specialize in "legere facings." To be honest, though, I'm not sure what the difference is--my regular mouthpiece these days is a vintage, out-of-the-box Selmer C85, and it takes Legeres just fine.

Don't lose hope! Keep messing around till you find something.

Did someone mention Legere yet?

Ok. Just checking!

I like the legere signature just fine. Great reed. Order a few different sizes, and they offer an exchange program so if you order a 3.5, 3.75, and 4, and find that the 3.75 is what you need, you can exchange the other two (for the cost of postage) throught their program with the receipt for the correct size.

I don't know if this is related but when I was in college I used to get cold sores on my lower lip at least 6 times a year, a real problem for someone like me practicing my butt off day after day. After several tests by several specialists it was determined that I was allergic to reed cane. Not good for me at the time, this was in the late 50's early 60's. After several tests I was given a series of small pox vaccines, one every few months for a year. My doc said there was something in it that might fight the allergy, it worked. It went down to 2-3 a year then about one a year and eventually almost never. by the way, I've never been allergic to anything since, nothing at all in my health history. Go figure.
I would suggest you clean your lip with Anbesol after each practice, I've used it that way ever since as a precaution. It works as an antiseptic. And then I apply a little bit of blistic as well. Give it a try, can't hurt.

I don't get along at all with Legere reeds, but Forestones are almost good. So good that I keep a few in my case for those "impossible" days.

The other thing you might try is to contact your dentist for some peridex oral solution. rinse your mouth with it twice a day.
