I have an A clarinet that doesn't have a barrel and I need to get one so I can use the clarinet for an audition. Any advice I can get on what kind of barrel, what brand, length, etc., would be great. The clarinet is a Selmer Signet. Thank you!

I think that you can get away with the Bb barrel, give or take a millimeter. Have you tried what's available in your household?

You can check on eBay...there are some nice barrels for sale.
I picked up 66 mm Backun Prestige and MOBA barrels for 1/2 of what you'd pay directly. A local person showed me how to adjust the diameter to get a better fit. It's amazing what 220/320/400/600 wet/dry sandpaper can do. You just have to be careful and work very slowly.

Or if you need it ASAP and so want something already commercially produced, I was impressed with Taplin Weir barrels. But dr. Segals barrels are custom to your instrument and mouthpiece.

EDIT - Make sure Taplin-Weir are aware it's for a selmer signet. Most production barrels are geared towards the Buffet clarinets since Buffet clarinets dominate the market.

I've never seen, or heard of, a Signet clarinet in A. I would check the bore size and compare it to a Signet Bb. If the bore is close I'd just use a Bb barrel. Whatever you get, I'd spend some time with a digital tuner and see where tuning issues might be.

Be wary of some of the advice given above. A clarinet barrels are usually *shorter* by a millimeter (65 vs 66 for a B-flat).
If you use a standard B-flat barrel you may be quite flat.
I have seen Signet A clarinets. They are generally miserable instruments.

I edited my above post regarding Taplin Weir. Not sure if they have barrels for a Selmer Signet, but just make sure you tell them which clarinet you have. Your best bet for this A would be a custom barrel, (Dr. Segal).

I never measured a Signet A clarinet, so I would ask that a potential client supply certain information before commissioning a barrel.
This would include how specific notes tune when using a Bb barrel that fits it upper joint tenon. Sockets can vary along the lines of some manufacturers.
Other things come into play as well.
Curious: For what is the original poster auditioning?

FYI only, Tom Ridenour designed the barrels of the Opus and Concerto Leblanc clarinets to be interchangable so that both barrel and mouthpiece could be easily moved from A to Bb. Currently, my Bb of choice is the Concerto that Tom "customized" for me while he was still with Leblanc, but my A is a vintage Buffet R13. What is of interest here, is that my Concerto Bb barrel works perfectly on my Buffet R13. My Buffet A is in tune and has great tonal quality and flexability making it a perfect match for my Concerto Bb. Just my contribution this AM to your posting question--hope it helps a bit.

Thank you for all of the information. I have an extra barrel that came with my b flat clarinet so I think I will try that first. I am auditioning for the orchestra in my home town. I thought the audition was in May but it's not until August so I have some time to figure things out.

Are you studying or have you studied with anyone? If so, (s)he will almost certainly lend you a barrel for the audition.
Has the orchestra given you a list of passages to have ready? I can send you many of them in PDF format. You will always be asked for Midsummer Night's Dream, the Beethoven 6th and the Mozart Concerto.

Is this not somewhat of a Buffet thing? It doesn't apply to my (different vintage) Selmers nor, AFAIC recall, to the Leblancs owned by a friend.

I'm currently taking a year off from school so I'm not studying with anyone at the moment but I know some people who can lend me a barrel if I need it. Yes, I have a list of excerpts and those three are on it as well as Brahms 3 and Capriccio Espagnol. Thank you for your help
