I need some advice on intermediate clarinets. I've been researching several, as I've "been out of the clarinet loop" for a long while. I played for years...but I had to sell my old clarinet several years ago. Now I'm wanting to get back into playing. I'm not looking for anything new or top of the line. I am on a budget, but I do want a nice sounding horn. Right now I'm looking at a Leblanc Noblet 40 and a Leblanc VSP. From what I can tell, they both from about 1975-78. I was hoping someone could give me some insight as to which would be the "better" horn. I'm also open to any suggestions on which other horns to consider.

Try before buy. All makes and models, old and new, high and low price-- likely range in quality from bad to artist.

Don't buy anything unplayed.
Take a long look --no rush. Listen for intonation as a first screening criterion. Intonation, sound quality, responsiveness... Look for flaws in the set-up that can throw off pitch or make it hard to get a tone-hole closed. Sometimes a simple tweak can turn a monster into something really sweet.
Don't forget that mouthpieces (and, groan, barrels) are very important in everything your clarinet does.
