Does anyone know if there is a place online where I can learn basic music theory or does anyone have any recommended books and where to get them?
thanks

You could try Gary Ewer's site at:
http://www.musictheory.halifax.ns.ca/
He even has a music theory forum where he will answer just about any question relating to music theory.

Laur et al:
I read the comments on this subject and it picqued my curiosity. I loged on to the MusicTheory page <www,musictheory.net> and it was WONDERFUL for an individual who has a very limited knowledge of music and really wanted a quick course on the basics. I. also, recommend that any one who is needing some refresher or just basic knowledge of music theory (notes, time values, basic chords, etc.) this would be an excellent place in which to turn. Extra Note -- you can even print out a basic page of music staff paper on which to write your own symphony or jazz selection. TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!!
